Who Are We?

The Chorus of the Comstock is made up of a bunch of guys who enjoy four-part, barbershop-style, harmony singing as a hobby. We were officially organized as a chorus in the mid 1960s under another name (being researched) and are a registered chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, formerly known as the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA) now based in Nashville, Tennessee.  We are a (501-c3) not-for-profit charitable organization who raises money through our various singing engagements and, in turn, provide higher education, musical scholarships and musical learning and experiencing grants to middle and high school students of music.

Over the years, our chorus has won many honors and trophies, though the focus of our group is not to compete, it is just to have fun. We have gone through many directors over the years, but in the past 10 years, we have been under the fine directorship of Jim Davis followed by John Metcalf.  Then, upon the sudden death of John, two of our longtime members took on the daunting duty of co-directing our chorus, one as a teaching director and the other as a performance director.  These two fine gentlemen, namely Chuck Abercrombie and Gil Graham, were able to keep our group together through some very lean years, for which we are very eternally grateful.  In December, 2006, the board hired our current director, Jim Crowley

We currently have over 35 members in our chorus, with active members living in Carson City, Carson Valley and in places as far away as Tahoe City and Fernly.  We are  hoping to grow our membership to around 50 by the end of this year. Our goal is to share our hobby of singing with all those who enjoy music and to encourage and promote our style of four-part harmony through our annual concerts, our Singing Valentines program as well as outreach to our community and local area schools.

The Chorus of the Comstock has been entertaining the community since the 60s. We specialize in Barbershop-style,       four-part harmony and we are always looking for men who enjoy singing to come and enjoy this hobby with us.  If you are interested in the possibility of singing barbershop, be sure to check out our meeting location page.
